How High Should Your Oven Be?
When you’re planning a new kitchen, it’s easy to get caught up choosing cabinet colours, worktops and appliances. But some of the smallest decisions can make the biggest difference to how your kitchen feels to use every day.
One of those is where your oven should sit.
It’s a question we’re often asked at Ray Munn Kitchens, and the answer is always the same: it depends on you. The best kitchen is one that’s designed around the way you live, not a fixed set of rules.
Why oven height is worth thinking about
Your oven is one of the hardest-working appliances in the kitchen. Whether you’re cooking a quick midweek meal, baking with the family or hosting friends, you’ll be opening the door, checking dishes and lifting hot trays in and out.
If it’s too low, you’ll spend years bending down. Too high, and lifting heavy cookware becomes less comfortable.
Finding the right position isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about making everyday cooking that little bit easier.
Eye-level ovens are a popular choice
Eye-level ovens have become increasingly popular, and it’s easy to see why.
Built into a tall housing, they’re much easier to access. You can see what’s happening inside without crouching down, and lifting dishes in and out feels far more natural.
For many homeowners, especially those who enjoy cooking regularly, it’s a simple design choice that makes a noticeable difference every day. It’s also something many people appreciate as they think about the long term, creating a kitchen that’s comfortable to use for years to come.
When an under-counter oven makes more sense
That said, eye-level isn’t always the right answer.
In some kitchens, particularly where space is limited, positioning the oven beneath the hob creates a more compact cooking zone and allows the rest of the layout to work more efficiently.
Some people also simply prefer having everything together in one place.
This is why we never recommend making decisions in isolation. Every part of a kitchen should work together, balancing practicality, storage and the way you naturally move around the space.
Is there an ideal height?
Rather than working to a fixed measurement, we prefer to work around the person using the kitchen.
As a general guide, having the centre of the oven somewhere between waist and chest height usually feels comfortable for most people. It allows you to check food easily and remove hot dishes safely.
But everyone’s different. Your height, how often you cook, and any mobility considerations all play a part.
That’s why a well-designed kitchen should always feel personal.
Designing for the years ahead
A new kitchen is an investment you’ll hopefully enjoy for many years.
Thinking about how you’ll use the space not just today, but five or ten years from now, often leads to better design decisions. Choosing an oven position that’s comfortable now can help ensure your kitchen continues to work beautifully as life changes.
It’s one of those details that often goes unnoticed, until you realise just how much easier it makes everyday life.
Our advice
If you’re wondering where your oven should go, don’t worry about finding the “perfect” measurement.
Instead, think about how you cook, who’s using the kitchen most often and what will feel comfortable every time you prepare a meal.
At Ray Munn Kitchens, every project begins with a conversation. By understanding how you live, we can design a kitchen that’s not only beautiful to look at, but a pleasure to use every single day.
